The Mothers' Union is a worldwide organisation withing the Anglican Church.

It was founded by Mary Sumner in 1876 (she was the wife of the then Rector of Alresford in Hampshire). She felt at that time there was a need to help mothers in the bringing up of their children.

A small group met in the Vicarage under the guidance of Mary and from then onwards spread across the whole country with women meeting in groups, and now it is across the whole world, and in all the continents.

The MU now has a membership of over four million, bringing help and comfort to those in need. It is financed by its own members.

The group at The Ascenion numbers twenty five and it meets once a month on a Wednesday afternoon. There are talks on various topics by guest speakers, tea and cake! Once a year we have a summer garden party, and also a pre-Christmass celebration. In September each year we gather for Evensong in church in place of the meeting.
